The DeFeo Era: A Vision for Neighborhood Unity
In June 1997, the story took a personal turn. Harry and Diane DeFeo, both 1975 graduates of Schreiber High School and lifelong Port Washington residents, purchased the deli. Having spent his career in the food and retail industry, Harry had a simple but powerful vision: he wanted to create a space where families from the neighborhood could gather to talk, laugh, and feel at home.
A Community Landmark Since the 1950s
The Harbor Deli story is a journey through generations, rooted in the heart of Port Washington. Long before it was the bustling catering and deli hub it is today, the storefront began its life in the 1950s as Ziggy’s Harbor Dairy—a neighborhood grocery and dairy shop. A decade later, it transitioned into Harbor Deli, establishing itself as the go-to spot for locals seeking a friendly face and a great sandwich.
